Breastfeeding Special Needs Babies
When my son was born with spina bifida myelomeningocele, I felt a lot of pressure to supplement with formula. After working so hard to prepare to breastfeed while I pregnant, everything went out the window. After having surgery at 36 hours old on his back, I couldn't use any of the breastfeeding holds I had studied. He was on heavy painkillers for several days and had gavage tube feedings. I was pumping around the clock to keep my milk supply up. It was only through a lot of support from my husband and some problem solving that I was able to exclusively breastfeed through my son's stay in the NICU.
I'd like to help make your experience a little easier.
